History

Vertshuset Røros is located at Rammgården in Kjerkgata. The history of the building is an account of periods of depression, as well as the golden eras, when power and influence reigned. The estate has been home to various owners of the copperworks, as well as mine officials and tradesmen.

The story of Rammgården
Rammgården’s roots extend right back to the early days of Røros Copperworks. As early as the 1600s, we are aware of an owner who went by the name of Skott-Oluf. During the latter part of the 17th century, the owners were the prosperous Angell family in Trondheim, who were part owners of Røros Copperworks.  Counsellor Albert Lorentzen Angell sold Rammgården in 1702 to mine book-keeper Peder Hiort the elder. His son, Peder Hiort the younger, would later become director of the copperworks and one of Røros’ most notable men through the ages. In 1844, Johan Natanael Ramm, the son of a major, purchased a property in Kjerkgata. There he erected the handsome building, eventually called Rammgården, which is now Vertshuset Røros. In 1857, Ramm established his own shop on the ground floor; in the backyard he ran a smallholding with cows and horses.

Since 1967, Rammgården has housed a restaurant, bar and meeting rooms. In 1988, Røros Turisthotell took over Rammgården and continues to run Vertshuset Røros to the present day.
